Musical depth, sensitivity and radiant energy lie at the heart of Zoltán Despond’s playing, shaped by a distinctive expressive intensity. Acclaimed by critics and fellow musicians alike, the cellist pursues a career as a soloist and chamber musician that has taken him to many international stages.
He has performed at venues including the Berlin Philharmonie, Vienna Musikverein, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Rudolfinum in Prague, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, L’Auditori in Barcelona, Oslo Konserthuset, DR Koncerthuset in Copenhagen, Alte Oper Frankfurt, BOZAR in Brussels, Mozarteum Salzburg, Warsaw Philharmonic, Stadtcasino Basel, National Forum of Music in Wrocław, Grieghallen in Bergen, Budapest Music Center and Salle Gaveau in Paris. In the summer of 2022, he made his debut at the Lucerne Festival.
Chamber music holds an essential place in his artistic life. Zoltán Despond has shared the stage with musicians including Ilya Gringolts, Andrey Baranov, Joë Christophe, Thomas Reif, Benjamin Engeli, Yulia Miloslavskaya, Jérémie Conus, Isabel Pfefferkorn, Thomas Grossenbacher and Richard Kogima. He enjoys a particularly close artistic collaboration with pianist Vesselin Stanev, with whom he appears regularly in recital.
His debut album, forthcoming on ARS Produktion, marks a new chapter in his artistic journey. Devoted to works by Robert Schumann and Paul Hindemith, the recording is conceived as a musical trajectory in its own right: an interplay of forms, proportions and characters, shaped by a single underlying movement from intimacy to brilliance.
Alongside his concert career, Zoltán Despond shares his experience with younger musicians. In 2024, he was invited to give a masterclass at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover.
Zoltán Despond studied with Pierre-Bernard Sudan, Marc Jaermann, Thomas Grossenbacher and Enrico Dindo. His artistic development was further enriched through encounters with Frans Helmerson, Antonio Meneses, Christophe Coin, Giovanni Sollima and Martin Ostertag.
